Grease Trap Contracts: Cancellation Rules
Understanding Wasterβs grease trap service agreements in Victoria and other states
Grease traps are not like bins that can be emptied weekly. By law, they must be cleaned at set intervals β usually every 3 or 6 months, depending on your local council.
When you appoint Waster as your registered grease trap cleaner, we take on compliance obligations. That means:
-
Services must occur in line with the schedule set when you sign up.
-
Pricing is offered in good faith on the basis of regular scheduled servicing, not one-off cleans.
-
Services are provided in Victoria on basis of at least 1 years services being performed.
State Differences in Cancellation Rules
Victoria
In Victoria, our grease trap contracts operate as a minimum 12-month agreement.
-
Historically, some businesses have attempted to waive away our service teams β leaving Waster still legally responsible as the nominated cleaner.
-
To avoid compliance risks and ensure fairness, a 12-month commitment is required once Waster is appointed.
All Other States and Territories (e.g. NSW, QLD, SA, WA, TAS)
In states outside Victoria, grease trap management is more tightly regulated:
-
Waster (and other providers) are registered as licensed transporters.
-
Each service is scanned, tracked, and reported directly to the relevant water authority (e.g. Sydney Water, Queensland Urban Utilities).
-
Because compliance is logged automatically, one-off cancellation is less of an issue.
-
Customers still commit to scheduled cleans, but there is no fixed 12-month lock-in like in Victoria.
No Bin Removal Fees for Grease Traps
Unlike bin services, there are no removal fees for grease traps, as no physical asset is supplied.
The key point is that our pricing and scheduling is based on the assumption of ongoing, compliant servicing, not one-off jobs.
Final Word
So while most Waster services run on a rolling 30-day flexible agreement, grease trap services are different:
-
Victoria: 12-month minimum agreement, due to self-policing compliance rules.
-
All other states: Services are tracked and reported to water authorities, so one-off misuse is less of an issue.
This ensures compliance with council and water authority rules while keeping pricing fair for all customers.
