Health and Safety When Loading and Emptying Bins

Safe loading practices to prevent overloads, rejected collections, and safety risks

Correctly loading your bins is just as important as safe placement and movement. Overloading or misusing bins can cause health and safety risks, damage equipment, and even result in rejected collections.

This guide explains the key rules to follow when filling bins, to ensure safe and efficient service.

Don’t Overload Bins

  • Always ensure the bin lid can close fully. Overfilled bins may not be collected.

  • Waste sticking out of the top can spill during collection, creating hazards for staff and the public.

  • Overloaded bins may become too heavy, making them unsafe to move or collect.

Keep to Agreed Waste Streams

  • Only place permitted waste types in each bin.

  • Disallowed items include hot coals, batteries, sharps, chemicals, liquids, and hazardous or medical waste (unless a specific service is provided for these streams).

  • Mixing waste types can cause contamination and additional charges, and may lead to rejected collections.

Avoid Excessive Weight

  • Each bin has a maximum safe weight capacity.

  • If a bin is too heavy, it risks:

    • Breaking or damaging the bin.

    • Slipping or falling when lifted by the truck, creating a serious safety hazard.

  • Spread waste across multiple bins or request a service with a higher weight allowance if needed.

Do Not Compact Material in Bins

  • Manual or mechanical compaction of waste inside bins is not allowed under Waster agreements.

  • Compaction can make bins excessively heavy, strain bin structures, and increase risks during emptying.

  • If you generate high-density waste, speak to Waster about tailored services instead.

Safety First for Staff and Collection Crews

Following these rules ensures:

  • Safe movement and emptying of bins.

  • Protection of staff, waste collectors, and the public from accidents.

  • Efficient, reliable service without delays or rejections.

Final Word

When loading bins, remember:

  • Lid must close — don’t overfill.

  • Only approved waste streams go inside.

  • Avoid excessive weight — don’t overload.

  • No compacting waste inside bins.

By following these simple rules, you’ll protect your staff, our collectors, and ensure bins are serviced safely every time.
